I dashed across the roof, and attempted to cut Impa off. As I reached the ground, they were racing out of the castle's gates on a white horse. I cursed and chased after them on foot.
Then I heard my name being called, and Ganondorf rushed toward me on the back of his stallion. I snatched the arm he held out to me, and he guided me into the saddle behind him. "What happened?" he snapped in agitation.
The task at hand was high priority, but not even death could have helped me escape the thoughts of how close I was to him suddenly. I hesitated in putting my hands on him, but we were going so fast I had no choice but to hold on for stability. "Zelda didn't have the ocarina, Impa does, and they're getting away," I informed.
We rushed after them, but by the time we reached the field they were already out of sight. The horse reared back when Ganondorf pulled the reins for an abrupt stop. When I didn't see our prey, my muscles tensed with both anger and fear. "I'll assemble a team and begin searching for them immediately," I swore. I needed to correct my fatal mistake.
He didn't answer me though, because he was glaring down at a boy in a green tunic. I could only recognize him as a Kokiri from Ganondorf's description during my history lessons. I was honestly shocked when Ganondorf didn't kill him, and only gave him a sample of his power with a stern warning. He directed his horse to gallop forward, and we kept going south toward Lake Hylia. I was so confused! I tried not to yell. "What are you doing?"
"You have no place questioning me, especially when you failed at securing Zelda," he scolded. I lowered my eyes to the ground and checked my tone. "This may very well be your redemption. You see, after Zelda's outburst at our meeting, I noticed her chatting with a boy in the courtyard through the window."
"And he was that boy? So, what?"
"Do you remember the hero that Nabooru talked about?"
"Yes, but do you really have to mention her right now?"
He sort of growled at me because I missed the point. But, he gently turned the horse around in the direction of the Hyrule castle. "We found the hero she was searching for."
"Oh, but he's just a kid. How could he possibly pose a threat to you? How could you know he is a legendary hero?"
"He is the last key I need to enter the Sacred Realm. As the hero, he can draw the Master Sword and I will take the Triforce."
And that was when the gears in my head finally lined up and began spinning. "But, how do you know it's him?" I asked again in my persistent nature.
"You'll just have to trust me," was all he responded with.
"I've trusted you so far. Why stop now?" I commented back.
We returned to Hyrule town, and then made our way to the Temple of Time. We avoided the road though, so we didn't have to waste time with the fighting going on between the remaining knights and the Gerudo. Since my team had managed to do one thing right, and eliminate as many guards as possible without alerting anyone, it was more like a massacre than a war. We had caught them completely by surprise.
The blonde boy was in the temple when we arrived, and to my great dismay he held the Ocarina of Time to his lips. I could only conclude that Impa, or Zelda, had given it to him as they escaped. Ganondorf and I waited in the shadows of the foyer for our time to strike.
The boy with the ocarina played this melody, a haunting song, which caused three stones to react. An emerald, a ruby, and a sapphire, the three spiritual stones, resonated atop the altar, and the Door of Time just in front of it split open to reveal the resting place of the Master Sword. I crept forward, and watched this little kid pull an adult sized sword from the stone pedestal. This sword was just as tall as him. It was simultaneously the most impressive and most ridiculous sight I had ever seen.
It was what happened after he retracted the sword that was breathtaking. A wide portal opened up into a void made of pure golden light, and the only item filling that void was the Triforce. I knew that must have been the Sacred Realm, where the essence of the goddesses rested. I thought we were going to have to kill the hero kid to reach it, but after Ganondorf thanked him for opening the door to the Triforce, and virtually handing Hyrule over to him, or us, the boy just disappeared. I was a little baffled, but I wasn't going to question something that worked in Ganondorf's favor.
I did not enter the realm which housed the Triforce, but I stood by the pedestal and watched in awe as Ganondorf touched it. The Sacred Realm faded to darkness and the Triforce exploded, with only one piece catapulting into him as predicted. An aura of magic surrounded him in a physical manifestation of red, blue, and green light, but I couldn't tell if it was entering him, leaving him, or both. There did appear to be some exchange or transfer going on, because the Sacred Realm began to take on a vortex of the same color. Inside that vortex I could see these ugly creatures, that I can only describe as demons or monsters, began to appear. The realm closed as Ganondorf stepped out of it, and an army of these creatures followed him. The monsters were unleashed on Hyrule, while I followed him back to the castle.
I should have known he wouldn't just remodel the existing castle. No, he had to exercise his new power. I couldn't blame him. There was this new energy I felt while standing near him. It was frightening, and intriguing, as if I wanted to know this power, but was afraid I might get hurt.
It was a good thing that part of the instruction for the domination of Hyrule was to completely evacuate the castle once Zelda was secure, or missing in this case, and I was about to learn why Ganondorf wanted it that way.
I watched breathlessly as he flattened the grand castle of Hyrule by waving one hand, and separated a section of land from the ground so that it hovered above our heads. I jumped back, and quite instinctively, hid behind Ganondorf as his new tower, my new home, sprang up from the dirt in full form with a wave of his other hand. I peeked out around his torso and was left speechless by the grand nature of the structure.
Well, I wasn't completely without words of course. "You couldn't do that before, could you?"
He gave me a sick smirk, most pleased with himself. "Not even close. This is just a taste of what I can do now. That barely consumed any energy at all."
Just a taste? No wonder a part of me was frightened, but I was still so excited to be a key player in his victory. "May I have the honor of announcing your kingship of Hyrule?" I begged. "Please?"
"I can't imagine anyone more deserving of such a task," he said arrogantly, and led the way forward to the market.
I swear my soul grew wings. Of course I deserved it! I was the second in command, after all. "How does the great Gerudo King Ganondorf, King of Hyrule, sound?" I asked on the way. I know, I didn't really have an imagination.
"Repetitive. I think you can do better than that," he challenged.
So, I thought about it. We entered the village, and the damage was already done. Buildings burned, but who started the fires I couldn't say. I assume it was a fair share of blame. Hyrule citizens fled the market, but the fighting was over. None remained alive who were brave enough to stand and fight. Seeing their king, the Gerudo assembled before us, the monsters forming behind them, and from the safety of their homes the remaining Hylians watched from their windows. Their expressions were filled with horror.
That's when the perfect title dawned on me.
I stepped forward, scanning the market to survey the remains of the chaos. My face was stern, as if daring anyone to challenge me and what I was about to declare. Clouds billowing from the tip of Ganondorf's castle blotted out the sun, and darkness fell on us. I spoke as loud and proud as I could. "I present your new ruler, the great Ganondorf, leader of the Gerudo Thieves, Tyrant of Hyrule, and the King of Evil."
I spun around in my spot, and bowed to my left knee with my right arm across my chest. The other Gerudo, and anyone else who feared for their lives enough to swear fealty, followed my lead. I looked up and found Ganondorf laughed cruelly, and with pleasure. I felt fulfilled, but my duty was not complete, not until we completed the Triforce.
